How to uninstall Lightshot on Windows
Lightshot has almost no data of its own to back up; its settings live in the registry, not a file. This guide covers Lightshot installed machine-wide from the Skillbrains.Lightshot winget package.
Quit Lightshot first
Lightshot runs from the tray and starts automatically at sign-in (Settings › Apps › Startup, look for "Starter Module" or "Lightshot"). Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for Lightshot.exe before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Lightshot, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Skillbrains.Lightshot
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
HKCU\SOFTWARE\SkillBrains\Lightshot |
Lightshot's own settings | Safe to remove |
Program Files (x86)\Skillbrains\Updater |
A separate background updater Lightshot installs alongside itself | Not removed by uninstalling Lightshot; delete this folder yourself if you want it gone |
HKCU\Software\SkillBrains\Updater |
The updater's own settings | Remove together with the updater folder above |
The updater also registers a scheduled task under Task Scheduler; open Task Scheduler, look under the root for an entry tied to Skillbrains, and delete it yourself alongside the updater folder if you want no trace of it left.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Lightshot -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Skillbrains.Lightshot
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\Skillbrains\lightshot"
Get-ItemProperty HKCU:\SOFTWARE\SkillBrains\Lightshot -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\Skillbrains\Updater"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the Lightshot program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. In this test the uninstaller removed it. Get-ItemPropertyon the registry key prints something only if it is still there. Lightshot's own uninstaller does not remove this key; it stays unless you delete it yourself.- The last
Test-PathreturningTruemeans the separate updater folder is still there; this is expected, since removing Lightshot does not remove it.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Inno Setup uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files and startup entry; it does not touch the Updater folder, its registry key or its scheduled task.
What Mole lists
For Lightshot installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder and the public Start Menu folder are selected by default.
HKCU\SOFTWARE\SkillBrains\Lightshotis listed but not selected.- The separate
Skillbrains\Updaterprogram folder, its registry key and its scheduled task are not currently listed; remove them yourself with the steps above if you want them gone.
What this test covered
Tested with Lightshot 5.5.0.7 installed through winget, machine scope, x86 Inno Setup package. The Updater folder, its registry key and its scheduled task were confirmed still present after a full uninstall with every listed row selected.
