How to uninstall Krita on Windows
This run covers Krita 5.3.4.0, installed machine-wide through elevated winget as an NSIS package, with publisher Krita Foundation. Preserve wanted projects, brushes and personal resources before removal.
Close Krita before uninstalling and keep a copy of any local data or settings you want to retain.
Remove the program
Find Krita in Windows Settings under Installed apps and choose Uninstall. Mole invoked the registered uninstall.exe /S in this run; Settings and external winget removal were not retested.
Check the result
Test-Path "$env:ProgramFiles\Krita (x64)"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\krita"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\krita"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\krita.log"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\krita-sysinfo.log"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\kritarc"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\kritadisplayrc"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\fontconfig\cache"
The first seven were False and the font cache was True. Independent checks also found the exact uninstall registration absent. Nothing was removed manually.
For your own check, a successful Test-Path query returns True when that specific path exists and False when it is absent. A query error leaves the result unresolved; neither result proves that every leftover is gone.
What Mole lists
The program, owned shortcuts, usage records, %LOCALAPPDATA%\krita\Cache and the root-level krita.log and krita-sysinfo.log files are selected by default. The whole %LOCALAPPDATA%\krita and %APPDATA%\krita profiles are listed but not selected by default; including app data includes them.
The root-level kritarc and kritadisplayrc configuration files are listed but not selected by default in the source patch. These four exact file leaves require Krita from Krita Foundation, and another installed Krita copy keeps them. No wildcard sweeps the root. Shared fontconfig caches, projects and shared machine associations remain.
What this test covered
Tested on October 4, 2026, in a Windows 11 ARM64 VM with a Mole development build, covering first launch and uninstall. Real artwork or personal-brush retention, other installation channels and the released download were not verified. Automatic detection after an external uninstall was not verified.
