How to uninstall KeePass on Windows
Back up your password database (a .kdbx file) before you remove KeePass; it lives wherever you chose to save it and is never touched by uninstalling the app. This guide covers KeePass installed machine-wide from the DominikReichl.KeePass winget package.
Quit KeePass first
Close the KeePass window and lock or save any open database. KeePass also starts a small preload helper at sign-in (Settings › Apps › Startup, look for "KeePass 2 PreLoad"). Check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for KeePass.exe before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find KeePass, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id DominikReichl.KeePass
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
Your .kdbx database file, wherever you saved it |
Your passwords | Back this up yourself; KeePass never touches it and neither does uninstalling |
%APPDATA%\KeePass\KeePass.config.xml |
Window layout and a few interface settings, no passwords | Safe to remove |
The program folder itself is not currently a listed row in Mole's review for this install; the uninstaller removes it on its own, so it does not require a separate manual delete.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process KeePass -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id DominikReichl.KeePass
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\KeePass2x"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\KeePass"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The third command returning
Falsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. In this test the uninstaller removed it on its own. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\KeePass"returningTruemeans the small settings file is still there, which is expected unless you removed it yourself.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same Windows Installer uninstall Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files, including the preload startup entry; it never touches your database file wherever you saved it, and in this test it left %APPDATA%\KeePass\KeePass.config.xml behind after the app had been opened once.
Account and sync
KeePass has no account of its own; your database is a local file. If you sync it through a cloud folder or a separate plugin, removing KeePass does not touch that sync setup or the copies it made.
What Mole lists
For KeePass installed machine-wide from winget:
- The public Start Menu shortcut is selected by default.
- The program folder is not currently a row of its own in this review; the vendor's uninstaller removes it directly.
%APPDATA%\KeePass, where the small settings file lives, is also not currently listed; check it yourself after uninstalling if you want it gone too. - Your
.kdbxdatabase is never listed, since it lives in a folder you chose yourself.
What this test covered
Tested with KeePass 2.61.1 installed through winget, machine scope, x86 Windows Installer package. No database was created during the test. The Windows Installer package for this app does not record its own install folder, which is why the program folder does not appear as a row here.
