How to uninstall Julia on Windows
Julia keeps its depot in %USERPROFILE%\.julia: installed packages, environments and your startup code. Back up any package you developed there and any environment you want to rebuild before removing Julia; project folders you keep elsewhere are not touched. This guide covers Julia 1.13.2 installed for the current user through winget into %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Julia-1.13.2, not a juliaup installation.
Quit and uninstall Julia
Close every Julia REPL window, then use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to check Task Manager for a remaining julia.exe. The test showed no startup entry. Open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, select Julia 1.13.2 and choose Uninstall; Windows 10 calls this page Apps & features. The uninstaller is Inno Setup, and the test ran its registered quiet command (unins000.exe /SILENT).
A UAC prompt appeared during the test's uninstall because the test installed Julia from an elevated session; a normal per-user installation does not need one.
For a winget installation:
winget uninstall --id Julialang.Julia --exact
winget runs the same uninstaller. It does not remove the depot.
Locations observed in testing
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Julia-1.13.2 |
The tested installation, about 1.1 GB | Run the uninstaller first; check for surviving files afterward |
%USERPROFILE%\.julia |
The depot: packages, environments and startup code; empty in this run | Keep it if you reinstall Julia or use another version; delete it only when you want every package and environment gone |
Check the result
winget list --id Julialang.Julia --exact
Test-Path -LiteralPath "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Julia-1.13.2" -ErrorAction Stop
Test-Path -LiteralPath "$env:USERPROFILE\.julia" -ErrorAction Stop
A winget row means the package is still listed; empty output or a source error alone does not prove removal, so also check Installed apps. For each Test-Path, True means that folder exists, while False without an error means it does not. After a normal uninstall the depot is expected to stay True. An access error leaves the result unknown.
What Mole lists
With Remove data and settings with apps off, the test's rows are:
- The install folder, selected with the Application row.
%USERPROFILE%\.julia, listed as personal data and not selected.- Usage records for the Julia program path, selected by default.
Explicit Select all and Also remove data include the depot, so check the selection before confirming. The data-default preference never selects it, since home dot folders and personal data stay outside that option. Files Mole removes go to the Recycle Bin.
In the test, the depot was left unticked and stayed in place. The install folder was already gone after the vendor uninstaller, and Mole removed the usage records.
What this test covered
Julia 1.13.2 was installed for the current user through winget and removed on October 21, 2026, in a Windows 11 ARM64 VM using a development build of Mole. The depot was empty; installing packages, keeping a non-empty depot and restoring it, updates and the downloadable Mole package were not verified.
