How to uninstall JetBrains Toolbox on Windows
JetBrains Toolbox is a manager, and the IDEs it installs are separate apps with their own rows in Mole's Software list; removing Toolbox does not remove them. If you no longer want an IDE Toolbox installed, remove it through Toolbox first, the same way for every JetBrains IDE (Toolbox and IDE uninstall docs); if you want to keep an IDE, leave it installed, since it keeps working without Toolbox. This guide covers Toolbox installed per-user from the JetBrains.Toolbox winget package.
Quit Toolbox first
Toolbox runs in the system tray and starts at sign-in. Right-click its tray icon and quit, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any JetBrains Toolbox process still listed.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find JetBrains Toolbox, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id JetBrains.Toolbox
Toolbox's own uninstaller opens its own window rather than running silently, so you still need to click through it even when starting from winget or Settings.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox |
Toolbox's own program files, settings, cache and downloaded installers | Back up first if you customized channels; otherwise safe to remove once Toolbox is gone |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox-Dev |
Data for Toolbox's separate development or preview channel, if you ever used one | Keep if you still use that channel; otherwise safe to remove |
IDEs Toolbox installed, under %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains and elsewhere |
Each is a separate app with its own settings | Not covered here; remove each IDE on its own, through Toolbox or Settings, if you want it gone too |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process -Name "*toolbox*" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id JetBrains.Toolbox
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\JetBrains\Toolbox"
Get-ItemProperty "HKCU:\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run" -Name "JetBrains Toolbox" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means it is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-PathreturningFalsemeans Toolbox's own folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.Get-ItemPropertyreturning values means the entry remains. With no output, check for permission or other query errors before deciding that it is absent.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same self-drawn uninstaller window Settings › Apps uses, so it still needs you to click through its Uninstall and Finish steps, and it removes the same program files. It does not touch %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox, Toolbox-Dev or any IDE Toolbox installed.
Account
Using Toolbox locally needs no JetBrains Account. If you use one for a subscription, uninstalling Toolbox does not cancel it or sign you out elsewhere.
What Mole lists
For JetBrains Toolbox installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder (
%LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox) and the Start Menu shortcut are selected by default. %LOCALAPPDATA%\JetBrains\Toolbox-Devis listed but not selected.- The
JetBrains Toolboxsign-in entry the uninstaller leaves pointing at the removed program is selected by default and backed up to a.regfile before removal. - IDEs Toolbox installed are separate apps with their own rows in Mole's Software list; removing Toolbox never removes them.
What this test covered
Tested with JetBrains Toolbox 3.8.1.0 installed through winget, per-user scope. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: an IDE installed through Toolbox, a signed-in JetBrains Account, and the Toolbox-Dev channel.
