How to uninstall GPT4All on Windows
GPT4All keeps downloaded models, your saved chats and its settings in %LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All by default, and models can make that folder many gigabytes. The uninstaller leaves it in place. If you plan to reinstall, keep that folder, or move the models and chats you want to another drive, before you remove anything. If you changed the download path in GPT4All's settings, your models are there instead and need the same decision. This guide covers GPT4All installed per-user from the nomic.gpt4all winget package, which puts the program in %USERPROFILE%\gpt4all. GPT4All settings
Quit GPT4All first
Close the GPT4All window, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any chat.exe still listed; that is GPT4All's own program. The test found no startup entry.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find GPT4All, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id nomic.gpt4all
Either way opens GPT4All's own maintenance window, which needs three clicks:
- On Welcome, Remove all components is already chosen. Click Next.
- Ready to Uninstall warns that the program directory,
%USERPROFILE%\gpt4all, will be deleted completely with everything in it. If you saved anything of your own in that folder, move it out first, then click Uninstall. - When it finishes, click Finish.
It does not touch %LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%USERPROFILE%\gpt4all |
The program itself | The uninstaller deletes it |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All |
Downloaded models, saved chats and settings, plus a Cache folder |
Keep it, or move the models and chats you want elsewhere, if you might reinstall; Cache alone is safe to remove |
%APPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All.ini |
A single settings file the uninstaller left | Keep it for the same setup after a reinstall; safe to remove for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai and %APPDATA%\nomic.ai |
The parent folders | Once the items inside are gone they are empty and can go too |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process chat -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id nomic.gpt4all
Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\gpt4all"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\nomic.ai\GPT4All"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\nomic.ai\GPT4All.ini"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listedchatprocess with a path undergpt4allmeans it is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\gpt4all"returningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans the uninstaller did not finish.Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\nomic.ai\GPT4All"returningTruemeans your models and chats are still on disk, which is expected if you kept them.Falsemeans they are gone.- The last
Test-PathreturningTruemeans the settings file is still there;Falsemeans it is gone.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall starts the same maintenance window Settings › Apps uses, so you click through the same three steps. It does not touch %LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All or GPT4All.ini.
What Mole lists
For GPT4All installed per-user from winget:
%LOCALAPPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4Allis listed but not selected. Ticking it, yourself or with Also remove data, sends your models and chats to the Recycle Bin with it, and a large models folder may be too big for the Recycle Bin, in which case Windows asks before deleting it for good.- The
Cachefolder inside it is a separate row, selected by default. - The Start Menu folder is selected by default.
- The program folder
%USERPROFILE%\gpt4allis not listed; GPT4All's maintenance window deletes it. Mole runs that window as it is, so you click the same three steps. %APPDATA%\nomic.ai\GPT4All.iniis listed but not selected. The sharednomic.aiparent and neighbouring files are kept.
What this test covered
Tested on September 29, 2026 with GPT4All 3.10.0 installed through winget, per-user scope, from an elevated session, on an ARM64 virtual machine. The uninstaller is a Qt Installer Framework maintenance tool with its own window, clicked through in the three steps above. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test; GPT4All.ini and the empty nomic.ai parent folders stayed. No model was downloaded and no chat was saved, so moving or removing a large model library was not verified.
On 2026-10-04, the added residue rules were checked with controlled files in the Windows VM using the current source: exact ownership, another installed copy and source-path absence after recycling. This did not repeat the vendor uninstall or verify a released package.
