How to uninstall GitKraken on Windows
Your repositories are ordinary Git folders wherever you cloned them, and removing GitKraken does not touch them. What the app keeps for itself is your profiles, preferences and integration state, mostly under a .gitkraken folder in your user profile. Push or commit work you care about, and back up that folder first if you might reinstall. This guide covers GitKraken installed per-user from the Axosoft.GitKraken winget package.
Quit GitKraken first
Commit, stash or push work in progress, then close every GitKraken window. GitKraken runs several helper processes alongside the main app, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any gitkraken.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find GitKraken, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Axosoft.GitKraken
Back up before you remove data
Copy %APPDATA%\.gitkraken to keep your profiles and preferences, and %LOCALAPPDATA%\GitKrakenCLI if you use GitKraken's bundled gk command line tool, before you clear either one.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\.gitkraken |
Profiles, preferences, integration state and logs | Back this up first; the uninstaller does not remove it |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\GitKrakenCLI |
GitKraken's bundled copy of the gk command line tool |
Remove it with the app unless you still run that copy |
%APPDATA%\GitKraken |
The app's local storage and Electron caches | Back up or note anything you need first; safe to remove for a clean start |
%USERPROFILE%\.gnupg |
Your GPG keys, shared with Git and every other signing tool; GitKraken may create it on first run | Never remove it as part of this uninstall |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process gitkraken -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Axosoft.GitKraken
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\gitkraken"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\.gitkraken"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\GitKrakenCLI"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means the app or a helper is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\.gitkraken"returningTruemeans your profiles and preferences are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\GitKrakenCLI"returningTruemeans the bundledgkcopy is still there; remove it yourself once you have checked whether you still use it.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\.gitkraken, %APPDATA%\GitKraken or %LOCALAPPDATA%\GitKrakenCLI on its own.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a GitKraken subscription or delete your GitKraken account. Handle those in your GitKraken account settings.
What Mole lists
For GitKraken installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder and the Start Menu folder are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\.gitkrakenis listed but not selected; thelogsfolder inside it is a separate row and is selected by default.%LOCALAPPDATA%\GitKrakenCLIis listed but not selected.%APPDATA%\GitKrakenis listed but not selected; the Chromium cache folders inside it, such as Cache, Code Cache and GPUCache, are separate rows selected by default.- A
gitkraken://link registration, if it still points at the removed program, is listed and selected by default, backed up to a.regfile first. Right-click menu entries GitKraken adds under folders are handled the same way. %USERPROFILE%\.gnupgand your repositories are not listed.
What this test covered
Tested with GitKraken 12.4.0 installed through winget, per-user scope. Every row was ticked and removed in this test. %USERPROFILE%\.gk, which GitKraken's gk command line tool uses for workspace lists, is not one of the rows Mole lists today; remove it yourself if you used gk and want a clean start. Not verified: a signed-in account, local Workspaces.
