How to uninstall Fork on Windows
Removing Fork does not touch your repositories: they are ordinary folders wherever you cloned them. Push anything you have not pushed yet, since the app is going away, not your work. This test found no settings folder separate from where Fork installs itself, so its own uninstaller removes any settings along with the program; look inside the install folder before you uninstall if you changed Fork's defaults and want them back later. This guide covers Fork installed per-user from the Fork.Fork winget package.
Quit Fork first
Close every Fork window, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Fork.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Fork, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Fork.Fork
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Fork |
The program files and, in this test, everything else Fork wrote too | Look inside before uninstalling if you changed settings and want to keep them; the uninstaller removes this whole folder |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Fork -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Fork.Fork
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Fork"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same folder; there is nothing else for it to leave behind in this app's case.
Account and license
Removing the app does not affect a Fork license you purchased. Reinstalling and entering the same license reactivates it.
What Mole lists
For Fork installed per-user from winget:
- The install folder rides on the app's own row and is selected by default.
- The desktop shortcut and the Start Menu shortcut are selected by default.
- No other row appeared for this installation: no separate settings, cache or registry entry was found.
What this test covered
Tested with Fork 2.21.0 installed through winget, per-user scope. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a configured git identity or SSH keys, and Fork's own update mechanism.
