How to uninstall Fan Control on Windows
Fan Control sets your fan curves from software, so once it is gone your fans go back to what the BIOS or the board's own tool decides. If you built curves you want to keep, save a copy of the configuration file you use before uninstalling. This guide covers Fan Control installed machine-wide from the Rem0o.FanControl winget package.
Turn off start with Windows and quit
If you set Fan Control to start with Windows, untick that option in Fan Control first. The project's release notes say this option runs it through a Task Scheduler task named "Fan Control", and that you can otherwise delete that task yourself. Then exit Fan Control from its tray icon and check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any FanControl.exe still listed. Fan Control runs with administrator rights, so it asks for administrator access each time it starts.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Fan Control, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Rem0o.FanControl
This is a machine-wide install, so Windows asks for administrator access.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%ProgramFiles(x86)%\FanControl |
Program files | Removed by the uninstaller |
| Start Menu shortcut | Shortcut | Removed by the uninstaller |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Common |
An empty per-user Common Files folder the installer created | Shared by other programs that use the same installer; leave it |
Check the result
Get-Process FanControl -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
Get-ScheduledTask -TaskName "Fan Control" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Rem0o.FanControl
Test-Path "${env:ProgramFiles(x86)}\FanControl"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - If
Get-ScheduledTasksucceeds without suppressed errors, no output means no start-with-Windows task is left. A listed task means the option was still on; delete it in Task Scheduler. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone. Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same files.
What Mole lists
For Fan Control installed machine-wide from winget:
- The program folder, the Start Menu shortcut and a row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program are selected by default.
- The shared
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Commonfolder is not listed.
What this test covered
Tested on September 26, 2026 with Fan Control 279 installed through winget, machine scope, removed with its Inno Setup uninstaller running silently. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Start with Windows was never turned on and no fan curve was saved, so neither was tested; the VM has no fans to control.
