How to uninstall Discord on Windows
Leave voice calls and streams, save any attachments you downloaded, and quit Discord. Removing the app does not delete your Discord account or cancel Nitro; your servers and messages stay reachable from a browser or another device. This guide covers Discord installed per-user from the Discord.Discord winget package, which installs the same app as Discord's own download.
Quit Discord first
Leave calls and streams, then quit Discord from its tray icon or window menu; closing the window can leave it running in the tray. Discord runs several processes, one per window plus helpers, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Discord.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Discord, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Discord.Discord
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Discord |
Program files | Removed by the uninstaller |
%APPDATA%\discord |
Local settings and app data | Back this up if you want to keep local settings; the uninstaller does not remove it |
Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache and similar folders inside %APPDATA%\discord |
App caches | Safe to remove |
| Desktop and Start Menu ("Discord Inc") shortcuts | App shortcuts | Removed by the uninstaller |
For how Discord's cache, message history and downloads differ, see Discord's troubleshooting guide.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process Discord -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Discord.Discord
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Discord"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\discord"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a copy is still running. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\discord"returningTruemeans your local settings are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.
Then check your servers and messages from a browser to confirm your account is unaffected.
If Discord notifications continue
Work out whether they come from a browser tab, another Discord install, or a process that is still running; quitting and uninstalling the desktop app does not sign you out of a browser session.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\discord on its own.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a Nitro subscription or sign you out of your account; check your subscription from Discord's own account settings on the web.
What Mole lists
For Discord installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder and both the Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\discord, where your local settings live, is listed but not selected. The caches inside it (Cache, Code Cache, GPUCache and similar) are listed as their own rows and selected by default.- If a
discord://link or another registration still points at the removed program, Mole lists it too and backs it up to a.regfile before removing it.
What this test covered
Tested with Discord 1.0.9259 installed through winget, per-user scope. The test installed it from an elevated session, which added an all-users startup entry a normal per-user install does not create. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: sign-in, servers and messages.
