How to uninstall Cherry Studio on Windows
Cherry Studio keeps your conversations, assistants, knowledge bases, attached files and provider settings, API keys included, in %APPDATA%\CherryStudio, and it keeps downloaded helper tools and MCP settings in a second data folder, %USERPROFILE%\.cherrystudio. Back up what you want to keep before you remove anything. This guide covers Cherry Studio installed per-user from the kangfenmao.CherryStudio winget package.
Back up your conversations first
Open Cherry Studio and go to Settings › Data Settings. Cherry Studio can back up to a local folder, WebDAV or S3-compatible storage, and its data settings page says a full backup contains conversation history, assistants, knowledge bases with their vector data, notes and attachments, preferences and provider configuration. The backup also carries your API keys, so keep the file somewhere private.
Quit Cherry Studio first
Close every Cherry Studio window, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Cherry Studio.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Cherry Studio, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id kangfenmao.CherryStudio
Removing the app does not revoke API keys you created with model providers. If you no longer want a key to work, delete it in that provider's own console.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\CherryStudio-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
%APPDATA%\CherryStudio |
Conversations, assistants, knowledge bases, files, settings and API keys | Keep it until your backup is verified; remove it only when you are done with the app |
%USERPROFILE%\.cherrystudio |
The earlier test found this folder without listing it for review. The Mac version of Cherry Studio keeps downloaded tools such as bun and uv plus MCP settings in the matching folder there, and the Windows install may do the same | Check what is inside, back it up if you want, and remove it yourself if you want a clean start |
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process "Cherry Studio" -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id kangfenmao.CherryStudio
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Cherry Studio"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\CherryStudio"
Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.cherrystudio"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. A listed process means a window or helper is still open. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. - The first
Test-PathreturningFalsemeans the program folder is gone;Truemeans files remain there. Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\CherryStudio"returningTruemeans your conversations and keys are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Test-Path "$env:USERPROFILE\.cherrystudio"returningTruemeans that folder is still on disk; back up what you want to keep before removing it.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files and the updater cache; it does not touch %APPDATA%\CherryStudio or %USERPROFILE%\.cherrystudio on its own.
What Mole lists
For Cherry Studio installed per-user from winget:
- The install folder is selected by default.
%LOCALAPPDATA%\CherryStudio-updateris selected by default.%APPDATA%\CherryStudiois listed but not selected, since it holds your conversations and keys. The Chromium cache folders inside it (Cache, Code Cache, Crashpad, GPUCache, logs and the like) are separate rows selected by default.- The rule added on September 29 lists
%USERPROFILE%\.cherrystudiofor review without selecting it. Its removal has not been retested on the VM; check the review in the version you use. - The desktop and Start Menu shortcuts; in this test the vendor's own uninstaller had already removed them before the review ran.
- A
cherrystudio://link registration is selected by default.
What this test covered
Tested with Cherry Studio 2.1.3 installed through winget, per-user scope. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: a signed-in account, saved conversations, knowledge bases, or what %USERPROFILE%\.cherrystudio contains on a real Windows install.
