How to uninstall Chatbox on Windows
Chatbox keeps your conversations and the model provider settings you entered on this PC, in its own data folder, and uninstalling the app leaves that folder in place. Copy it first if you want to keep your chats or move them to another machine. This guide covers Chatbox installed per-user from the Bin-Huang.Chatbox winget package.
Quit Chatbox first
Close every Chatbox window. Chatbox runs as several processes, so check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any Chatbox still listed before you uninstall. It added no startup entry in this test.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Chatbox, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Bin-Huang.Chatbox
The uninstaller runs silently for a per-user install and removes the program folder and its shortcuts.
Where the data lives
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\Chatbox |
Program files | Removed by the uninstaller |
%APPDATA%\xyz.chatboxapp.app |
Conversations, settings and the provider settings you entered | Back it up if you want your chats; remove it for a clean start |
%LOCALAPPDATA%\xyz.chatboxapp.app-updater |
Downloaded update installers | Safe to remove |
HKCU\Software\Classes\chatbox |
The chatbox:// link registration |
Remove once the app is gone |
Check the result
Get-Process Chatbox -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Bin-Huang.Chatbox
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Programs\Chatbox"
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\xyz.chatboxapp.app"
Test-Path "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\xyz.chatboxapp.app-updater"
Test-Path "HKCU:\Software\Classes\chatbox"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-Pathon the program folder returningFalsemeans it is gone.Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\xyz.chatboxapp.app"returningTruemeans your conversations and settings are still there, which is expected unless you removed them yourself.Truefor the updater folder or thechatboxkey means those are still there; neither is needed once the app is gone.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same uninstaller Settings › Apps uses and removes the same program files; it does not touch %APPDATA%\xyz.chatboxapp.app or the updater folder.
Account and subscription
Uninstalling does not cancel a Chatbox license or a model provider's plan, and it does not revoke the API keys you entered. Revoke keys at the provider if you no longer want them usable.
What Mole lists
For Chatbox installed per-user from winget:
- The program folder, the desktop and Start Menu shortcuts, and a row grouping Windows' own records of when you opened the program are selected by default.
%APPDATA%\xyz.chatboxapp.appis listed but not selected, since it holds your conversations and settings.%LOCALAPPDATA%\xyz.chatboxapp.app-updater, which holds only downloaded update installers, is selected by default.- The
chatbox://link registration, still pointing at the removed program, is selected by default and backed up to a.regfile before removal.
What this test covered
Tested on September 28, 2026 with Chatbox 1.23.5 installed through winget, per-user scope, removed with its NSIS uninstaller running silently. Every listed row was ticked and removed in this test. Not verified: saved conversations, a signed-in license, or configured model providers.
