How to uninstall Azure VPN Client on Windows
Before removing Azure VPN Client, keep the VPN profile file or setup instructions your administrator gave you, so you can connect again later. This guide covers the per-user MSIX package installed through winget, not the VPN settings built into Windows.
Disconnect and uninstall
Disconnect any VPN connection and close Azure VPN Client, then use Ctrl+Shift+Esc to check Task Manager for a remaining Azure VPN Client process (AzVpnAppx.exe in the test). The test showed no startup entry. Open Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Azure VPN Client and choose Uninstall; Windows 10 calls this page Apps & features. Let Windows remove the package rather than deleting its WindowsApps directory.
For a winget installation:
winget uninstall --id Microsoft.AzureVPNClient --exact
This asks Windows to remove the installed package. It does not change your organization's VPN gateway or remove your work account.
Local data observed in testing
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.AzureVpn_8wekyb3d8bbwe |
This MSIX package's local data | Keep what you need to reconnect first; Windows removes the container with the package |
This location comes from the test, not from a vendor cleanup list. Leave the Packages parent folder alone.
Check the result
Get-AppxPackage -Name Microsoft.AzureVpn -ErrorAction Stop | Select-Object Name, PackageFullName
Test-Path -LiteralPath "$env:LOCALAPPDATA\Packages\Microsoft.AzureVpn_8wekyb3d8bbwe" -ErrorAction Stop
A successful package query with no rows means the package is not registered for the current user; a returned row means it still is. True means the data container exists, while False without an error means it does not. A permissions or query error leaves the result unknown. Neither command checks VPN profiles your administrator manages elsewhere.
What Mole lists
Mole lists the package data with the Application row, selected by default. Windows handles its removal as part of uninstalling the MSIX package; it is not a separately recycled folder. In the recorded run, the package registration disappeared and the container was already absent when leftovers were checked. No other Azure VPN Client location appeared in the test's before-and-after comparison.
What this test covered
Azure VPN Client 4.0.5.0, the x64 MSIX package from winget, was installed for the current user and removed on October 21, 2026, in a Windows 11 ARM64 VM using a development build of Mole. The main window opened without signing in. No VPN profile was imported and no connection was made, and updates and the downloadable Mole package were not verified.
