How to uninstall Alacritty on Windows
Alacritty is a terminal emulator, so quitting it ends whatever is running inside its windows; save any work in other apps first. This guide covers Alacritty installed machine-wide from the Alacritty.Alacritty winget package.
Quit Alacritty first
Close every Alacritty window, or press Ctrl+Shift+Q inside it, then check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for any alacritty.exe still listed before you uninstall.
Remove the app with its own uninstaller
Go to Settings › Apps › Installed apps, find Alacritty, and choose Uninstall, or run:
winget uninstall --id Alacritty.Alacritty
Where the data lives
Alacritty's configuration documentation lists the file it looks for on Windows as %APPDATA%\alacritty\alacritty.toml. Alacritty configuration docs
| Location | What it holds | What to do |
|---|---|---|
%APPDATA%\alacritty\alacritty.toml |
Your configuration, if you created one | Review before removing; back it up if you want to reuse your settings |
If you never created a configuration file, Alacritty was running on its defaults and there is nothing to back up.
Check the result
Run these read-only commands after the uninstall finishes:
Get-Process alacritty -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue
winget list --id Alacritty.Alacritty
Test-Path "$env:APPDATA\alacritty\alacritty.toml"
- No output from
Get-Processonly means this query observed no matching process; a suppressed error leaves the running state unknown. - A completed
winget listquery with no match means the package record is gone; a matching row means the uninstall did not finish. Test-PathreturningTruemeans your configuration file is still there, which is expected unless you removed it yourself;Falsemeans it never existed or is already gone.
If you installed it with winget
winget uninstall runs the same MSI uninstall Settings › Apps uses (msiexec /x ... /passive) and removes the program files and Start Menu shortcut; it does not touch %APPDATA%\alacritty on its own.
What Mole lists
For Alacritty installed machine-wide from winget:
- The Start Menu shortcut is selected by default.
- Alacritty's MSI entry does not register an install location, so Mole finds the program folder itself through Windows Installer's component records, to size it and offer to quit its process before removal; that folder is never offered as a leftover to delete, since msiexec already owns it.
%APPDATA%\alacritty\alacritty.tomlis not part of the uninstall review; check it yourself if you want to keep or remove your configuration.
What this test covered
Tested with Alacritty 0.17.0 installed through winget, machine scope, on an ARM64 test VM. No configuration file had been created on the test PC. The app was still running during that uninstall; Mole now finds it and asks to quit it first.
