# C Drive Full on Windows: Choose Cleanup, Migration or Uninstall

If temporary-file cleanup helps only briefly, inspect what occupies C: before repeating it. Games, videos, downloaded cloud files and an earlier Windows installation belong to different owners. Choosing the right management tool avoids breaking software or losing files you intended to keep.

## Classify storage before choosing an action

Open Settings, System, Storage and let the categories finish calculating. Compare Installed apps, Temporary files, documents and system storage. Record available capacity under This PC in File Explorer. [Microsoft's storage settings guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/storage-filemanagement/storage-settings-in-windows) also covers other drives and defaults for saving new content.

Categories identify a direction; folder scans identify files. Permissions, changing data and accounting differences can prevent their totals from matching. A difference is not automatically hidden junk. Mole's Analyze page can locate large folders, which you can inspect in File Explorer before acting.

For a hypothetical PC with 90 GB of games, 40 GB of videos and 2 GB of temporary files, repeated temporary cleanup has limited effect. An unused game or a verified video transfer is a larger opportunity. Those figures are an example, not a cleanup estimate for your PC.

## Match the content to its owner

| Content | Appropriate action | Check beforehand |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unused apps or games | Windows uninstall or the game's launcher | Saved games, add-ons and downloaded content |
| Videos, installers, documents | Copy through File Explorer | A complete, readable destination copy |
| Synced OneDrive copies | OneDrive's Free up space | Cloud presence and offline needs |
| Temporary files or earlier Windows installation | Windows storage tools | Selected scope and rollback needs |
| WSL, Docker or VM disks | Their own management tools | Code, databases and environments inside |

Avoid moving an installed app by cutting and pasting its program folder. Services, paths and update registrations can still reference the old location. Use supported game-library migration or back up app data and reinstall according to the vendor. Changing where new content is saved does not prove existing content has moved.

## Copy personal files and test the copy

Choose a folder you can move, copy it to storage with enough free space and retain the original. Compare file counts and open important files at the destination. Follow the app's export or backup procedure for databases and other actively written data; copying one database file while it is changing can produce an incomplete backup.

Only then handle the original. A file in the Recycle Bin still uses space on its drive. Verify the contents again before emptying it, which ends that recovery path. [Microsoft's space guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/storage-filemanagement/free-up-drive-space-in-windows) treats personal-file migration separately from system cleanup.

## Review temporary-file selections

Windows 11 offers Cleanup recommendations; Windows 10 provides Temporary files and Disk Cleanup. Available items and labels vary by version. If Downloads appears in a cleanup list, inspect it: documents you saved there do not become cache because a cleanup tool lists the folder.

Before selecting Previous Windows installation(s), verify the upgraded system, essential apps and any old files you need. [Microsoft's previous-version guide](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/install-upgrade/delete-your-previous-version-of-windows) explains that deleting `Windows.old` removes that rollback route. A personal-file backup does not replace it.

Leave paging, hibernation and component-store files to Windows. Do not take ownership of `Windows`, `WinSxS` or `Installer` to force a category total down.

## Track what grows again

Record free capacity after cleanup, perform your usual work and inspect the same categories or folders again. Video outputs, repeating error logs and cloud downloads need different remedies. Investigate the owning app when a folder keeps growing.

[Storage Sense](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/storage-filemanagement/manage-drive-space-with-storage-sense) manages selected content on the system drive. Read its Downloads, Recycle Bin and cloud-content policies before enabling them; age alone does not establish that a file is unwanted.
