# What Windows Optimization Actually Does

A Start menu that will not open, unresponsive search, or an error from an uninstalled program at every sign-in is more specific than a PC feeling slow. A maintenance tool should explain which problem it addresses and how to check the outcome.

Mole's Optimize page handles repairs and maintenance: refreshing Start and search, checking invalid startup entries, clearing DNS cache, and checking disk and Windows state under appropriate conditions. It does not run every task on every click.

## Start with the problem you can observe

| What happens | The part maintenance can address | What to check afterward |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Start or search is unresponsive | Refresh the relevant components | Open Start or repeat the same search |
| An uninstalled app is still launched at sign-in | Verify a startup target really is gone | Check for the error at the next sign-in |
| Name resolution may retain an old record | Clear the local DNS resolver cache | Retry the same address, then separate proxy, network and server problems |
| Windows maintenance or updating is failing | Conditional image, update-download and disk checks | Read the maintenance outcome and Windows Update state |

Clearing DNS cache does not change Wi-Fi reception, broadband capacity or a remote server. Image health checks do not explain every slowdown. Identifying the affected operation makes the result useful.

## Some tasks run only when needed

Mole checks whether maintenance applies. It does not switch a deliberately disabled Windows Search service to automatic startup or take over organization-managed time synchronization. SSD maintenance considers recent runs; a hard disk does not receive the same operation simply because it appears in the drive list.

Update-download handling also requires conditions: recent repeated installation failures, no installation in progress, and no pending restart. It does not reset Windows Update settings and policies alongside downloaded content.

If a disk reports a problem, back up the files you need first. Maintenance that writes to that disk yields to that priority. Unknown status is not proof of a healthy drive; unavailable hardware information still needs vendor or system investigation.

## Administrator approval applies to the tasks that need it

Some maintenance runs under the current account. Only tasks requiring administrator access request approval. Declining leaves those tasks undone, so completing a run is not proof that every repair succeeded.

Save your work before starting. System repair can take time and may request a restart. Read the results, then repeat the operation that was broken. What matters is that operation working again, rather than an unspecified speed increase.

## Cleaning, updating and optimization have separate entries

Use Clean or Analyze for storage, Apps updates for newer software versions, and Optimize for shell problems and maintenance. When app updating is already running, Mole can perform unrelated maintenance while skipping tasks that may interfere with installers.

Microsoft's [performance guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/experience/performance-optimization/tips-to-improve-pc-performance-in-windows) also distinguishes storage, startup, background apps and hardware. For sustained CPU activity, inspect [the running programs](/windows/blog/windows-high-cpu-usage). Maintenance does not require disabling security tools, system services or unfamiliar registry entries.
