# Why Edge Keeps Running After You Close It

Edge windows can be closed while msedge processes remain in Task Manager and a cleaner reports that the cache is in use. This does not necessarily mean quitting failed. Edge can keep processes for a faster next launch or for background extensions and apps.

## Startup boost and background apps are separate

Microsoft's [startup boost guidance](https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/edge/get-help-with-startup-boost) explains why Edge processes can remain ready between launches. Background extensions and apps have their own setting. Turning off one option does not necessarily stop the other kind of activity.

Open this location in Edge's address bar. It opens settings without changing an option:

```text
edge://settings/system/manageSystem
```

Review Startup boost and Continue running background extensions and apps when Microsoft Edge is closed. Keep the features you use; disable background behavior you do not need, quit the browser, and check Task Manager again. Locations and labels can change with the Edge version, and an organization may control the settings.

## Distinguish Edge from WebView2

Other Windows applications can use Microsoft's WebView2 to display content. Its processes commonly appear as `msedgewebview2.exe`. Closing the browser does not necessarily close the apps using that component.

Check the executable location, owning app and parent before ending anything with Edge in its name. A component used by a mail, chat or office app belongs with that app's workflow. Microsoft's [WebView2 introduction](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2/) describes how applications use it.

## Why Mole says the cache is in use

Mole keeps content that its owning software is still using. A notice in the review list asks you to deal with the program first; it is not a failed cleanup. When the relevant programs have no windows, Mole identifies background activity and offers a force-quit action that requires confirmation.

Save browser forms and ongoing work before confirming. Check that the listed program is the one you intend to close, then review the cleanup list again. Quitting background processes resolves the current lock. To change behavior at future sign-ins, return to Edge's settings.

If the cache remains locked, another app or runtime may share it. Do not end an unfamiliar system component to select one cleanup row, or delete an entire browser profile directory.

## Background activity is not automatically a fault

Check for sustained slowdown, battery use or network activity before changing settings. Processes existing and processes remaining busy are different observations. Mole's Status page shows app usage; see the [high CPU guide](/windows/blog/windows-high-cpu-usage) for investigation steps.

For cleanup, distinguish image caches, offline data and browser profiles. Passwords, bookmarks and sign-in state do not become disposable when a window closes. The [Windows cache guide](/windows/blog/windows-cache-cleanup) explains those boundaries.
