# Clear Discord Cache on Windows Without a Full Reset

If Discord gets stuck loading, try its documented cache folder before resetting the whole app. The narrow Windows target is `%AppData%\discord\Cache`. Keep the parent folder, which is a different troubleshooting scope, and test one change before clearing anything else.

## Decide Whether Cache Is the Problem

[Discord's troubleshooting guide](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/31623498041623-Discord-Troubleshooting-Guide)
includes cache clearing for loading freezes, but lists connection and audio problems separately.
Check the [Discord service status](https://discordstatus.com/) before changing local files.
An outage does not become a cache problem because the desktop window is blank.

Try restarting Discord first. Note what fails, whether the browser version works, and the
folder's size before cleanup. If the desktop works after a restart, stop there. If voice alone
fails, follow Discord's audio troubleshooting rather than repeatedly deleting local data.

## Quit Discord Completely

Leave calls and streams, then use the Discord icon in the notification area near the clock
to quit the app, if that menu offers an exit action. Do this before opening its data folder.
Do not treat a closed window as confirmation that the app has stopped.

Discord's guide explicitly says to fully close it and check Task Manager. Confirm no Discord
process remains before proceeding. If one remains, save any work and end that specific Discord
process, not an unrelated process with a similar name.

## Find the Narrow Target

Paste `%AppData%\discord\Cache` into File Explorer's address bar. Discord documents this
location for Windows. If it does not exist, stop instead of deleting a neighboring folder or
assuming another installation uses the same layout.

| Location | Evidence | First action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| `%AppData%\discord\Cache` | Discord's documented cache target | Inspect, then clear only this target |
| `%AppData%\discord\Code Cache` | Separate cache rule in Mole for Windows | Leave for a separate review |
| `%AppData%\discord\GPUCache` | Separate cache rule in Mole for Windows | Leave for a separate review |
| `%AppData%\discord` | Parent app-data folder | Keep during a cache-only test |

Discord's current support page names Cache, not all three leaves. The other two paths are
confirmed in Mole's catalog, not presented here as a vendor instruction to delete them together.
Changing one target makes the result easier to interpret.

## Clear Cache Without Resetting the Profile

With Discord stopped, select only the contents of the confirmed Cache folder and use ordinary
Delete. Read the Windows prompt and keep the items in the Recycle Bin for now. Cancel if it
offers permanent removal and you need a recovery route. Do not use Shift+Delete.

[Microsoft's Disk Cleanup reference](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/administration/windows-commands/cleanmgr)
explains that recycled files remain on disk until removed from the bin. A smaller cache folder
therefore does not immediately mean more free disk space.

Leave every other folder and file under the Discord parent untouched. In particular, a
cache-only test should not become the broader AppData reset in Discord's
[corrupt-installation instructions](https://support.discord.com/hc/en-us/articles/115004307527--Windows-Corrupt-Installation).
That repair removes app data and installation files and needs separate preparation.

## Reopen and Check the Same Failure

Open Discord and repeat the action that failed. Check the account and settings you use before
discarding the retained files. Cache can grow again as content is fetched, and rebuilding
needs a working connection and available source content. It is not recovery of personal files.

If the test makes things worse, quit Discord again before restoring the retained items to
their original location. Restore only this batch, inspect any conflict prompt, and do not
overwrite newer data blindly. Recovery is available only while those items remain in the bin.

If the same loading failure remains, record the error and the result of this test for Discord
support. Do not expand straight to deleting the parent folder. For other storage targets, use
the [Windows cache guide](/windows/blog/windows-cache-cleanup) or the
[temporary-folder guide](/windows/blog/windows-temp-folder-cleanup).

## Where Mole Fits

Mole for Windows has separate Clean rules for `%AppData%\discord\Cache`,
`%AppData%\discord\Code Cache` and `%AppData%\discord\GPUCache`. These target the cache
leaves, not the whole Discord parent. Review the paths that actually appear on your PC.
The [Discord tested-app guide](/windows/tested-apps/discord) covers uninstalling separately.

## FAQ

### Do I Need to Delete All Three Cache Folders?

Start with the Cache location Discord documents. Code Cache and GPUCache have their own
Mole rules, but that does not make deleting all three necessary for every loading problem.

### Will This Reset Sign-In and Settings?

This procedure deliberately leaves the parent app-data folder alone. It is not a guarantee
about every client version's session behavior. If asked to sign in, stop further deletion,
sign in to the intended account and verify settings before trying a broader repair.

### Why Is There No Extra Free Space Yet?

Files retained in the Recycle Bin still occupy space. Verify Discord first, then review just
those entries before permanently removing them. Do not empty unrelated bin contents.
