# Telegram and WhatsApp Storage on Mac: What to Keep

> Reduce Telegram cache, check WhatsApp's local chat data, and review group folders without assuming every attachment can be downloaded again.

When Telegram or WhatsApp takes more space than expected on a Mac, first separate downloaded media from chat history. Start with Telegram's cache controls, but keep WhatsApp's local data until you have checked the conversations and files you need elsewhere. The same folder-deletion shortcut does not suit both apps.

## Separate Cache From Chat History

[Telegram's FAQ](https://telegram.org/faq#q-how-do-i-log-out) distinguishes cloud chats from device-specific Secret Chats and describes clearing cache without logging out. [Meta's explanation of linked devices](https://engineering.fb.com/2021/07/14/security/whatsapp-multi-device/) describes WhatsApp history being transferred to a companion device and then read from its local database.

| Data | What to check | First action |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Telegram cloud-chat media cache | The original message and media are still available | Clear cache inside Telegram |
| Telegram Secret Chats | Important content exists on this device | Preserve it before any local-data reset |
| WhatsApp history and received media | Needed conversations and attachments are available on the phone or in a verified copy | Save what matters before removing local data |

Synchronization is not an independent backup. Open important attachments on the other device rather than treating a successful sign-in as proof that every file is recoverable.

## Clear Telegram's Cache Inside the App

These steps concern native Telegram for macOS. Telegram's FAQ also distinguishes it from Telegram Lite and the cross-platform desktop client, so do not expect identical settings in every Telegram app.

1. Open Telegram's settings and find the storage-usage controls under its data and storage settings, following the FAQ above.
2. Record the cache size and save any attachments you need to use without a connection.
3. Use the cache-clearing control, rather than deleting messages, logging out or resetting the local database.
4. Check the storage figure again, then open a cloud-chat attachment you are willing to download again.

For cloud-chat media, clearing cache removes the local copy while leaving the cloud source available. It still needs a working connection and an accessible original to download again. This is not a recovery promise for deleted messages or Secret Chats.

If the displayed cache falls but the app's total remains large, stop and identify the remainder. A whole data directory is not a cache-only measurement.

## Limit Telegram's Future Cache

Telegram's [macOS retention description](https://translations.telegram.org/en/macos/settings/StorageUsage.KeepMedia.Description) says media not accessed during the chosen period is removed locally and stays in the cloud. Its [cache-limit description](https://translations.telegram.org/en/macos/settings/StorageUsage.Limit.InfoUpdated) says exceeding the limit removes the oldest unused media.

Record the current retention period, choose a shorter period that suits your offline needs, then review the size limit offered by your version. Change one setting at a time. These controls concern local cached media, not how long a conversation should exist.

Revisit the same storage screen after normal use. If needed files now require downloading too often, restore the previous period or increase the limit. No particular size or duration is right for every Mac.

## Handle WhatsApp as Local Chat Data

WhatsApp's [storage-management help](https://faq.whatsapp.com/5503646096388294/?cms_platform=iphone&locale=en_US) documents phone controls. It does not establish the same screen on the Mac. Do not follow a phone walkthrough as though it were a verified Mac cache button.

On the Mac, start by opening a large attachment you recognize and saving a separate copy if you need it. Confirm that the copy opens outside WhatsApp, then check the conversation on your primary phone before considering removal of Mac data.

Meta's linked-device explanation above describes a local database, not a Telegram-style archive from which every Mac file can be fetched again. Do not assume the Mac's whole history is backed up in the cloud, or that relinking will return every older attachment.

If your Mac version offers a storage control, read its deletion confirmation before using it. A command to delete messages or clear a chat is not evidence of a cache-only operation. If the scope is unclear, leave the data in place.

## Locate the Large Store Without Deleting It

Telegram's [macOS signing documentation](https://github.com/TelegramMessenger/telegram-macos/blob/master/INSTALL.md) identifies the native app's group as `6N38VWS5BX.ru.keepcoder.Telegram`. The app-specific locations below are also relevant to Mole's uninstall review, not a list of folders to empty.

| Location | Review decision |
| --- | --- |
| `~/Library/Group Containers/6N38VWS5BX.ru.keepcoder.Telegram` | Keep while Telegram's local content is needed |
| `~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.shared` | Review received media before selecting it for uninstall |
| `~/Library/Group Containers/group.net.whatsapp.WhatsApp.private` | Review alongside the other WhatsApp data, not as a disposable cache |

These WhatsApp names are ownership patterns recognized by Mole, not a vendor guarantee that every installation has those folders. Compare the exact paths with what is actually present. Never substitute the whole `~/Library/Group Containers` parent for a missing app folder.

Removing an entire store can discard the local content inside it. Keep the original when recovery is unverified. If you have already moved it to the Trash, do not permanently delete it while checking recovery; that copy is available only while it remains there, and returning it does not guarantee the app will accept it.

## Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac's **Clean** catalog includes `~/Library/Caches/ru.keepcoder.Telegram` and `~/Library/Caches/net.whatsapp.WhatsApp` under **Communication**, when eligible. Those cache paths are separate from the group stores above, so their size does not represent all chat storage.

In the **Apps** uninstall review, eligible Telegram team-prefixed group data and WhatsApp's app-scoped `.shared` and `.private` group data are review rows, unchecked with the default app-data selection setting off. Unchecked is a decision still to make, not protection after you explicitly select the row. Read the [Telegram](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/telegram) and [WhatsApp](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/whatsapp) uninstall guides before removing either app's data.

## FAQ

### Does Clearing Telegram Cache Delete Chats?

Telegram's cache control is for local cached media, not deleting cloud conversations. Secret Chats and a whole local-data reset need separate care, so do not replace the cache control with folder deletion.

### Can WhatsApp Download Everything Again After I Delete Its Folders?

Do not assume so. Check needed chats on the phone, save important attachments separately, and keep the Mac data when you cannot verify recovery.

### Why Does the Storage Grow Again?

Opening media can create local copies again. Review Telegram's retention and size controls, and compare the same store before and after one change instead of repeatedly deleting whole chat folders.
