# How to Uninstall Steam on Mac Without Losing Games

> Uninstalling Steam is separate from deleting its libraries and local saves. Check every library location and what Steam Cloud actually covers before you remove data.

You can uninstall Steam without removing the games or saves you want to keep. Steam’s
Mac removal instructions say to retain `SteamApps` in
`~/Library/Application Support/Steam` when you do not want to lose game downloads and
local save files. That is the default library, not necessarily the only one on the Mac.

Steam Cloud and local saves are not one universal backup. They are specific to each game, so
do not treat a cloud badge or a successful Steam sign-in as proof that every save can be
discarded.

## Choose what you want to keep

First decide whether you are removing only the Steam app, making room by removing selected
games, or clearing all local Steam data. Those choices have different recovery paths. Removing
the client does not close the Steam account, while deleting local files can remove downloads
and game data that will take time or may be impossible to restore.

If the goal is troubleshooting, a client reinstall can be enough. If the goal is disk space,
look at the installed library rather than assuming the application itself is the large part.
If you are passing the Mac to someone else, make an explicit decision about every local game
and save before removing the data.

## Keep every Steam library before removing the client

Steam’s [official removal instructions](https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/30EB-87BF-531F-512D)
separate the client from its local data. On a Mac, they identify
`~/Library/Application Support/Steam` and specifically say to retain `SteamApps` when you
do not want to lose game downloads and local save files.

Do not delete the whole Steam support folder simply because you want a fresh client.
Keep its `SteamApps` folder in place or copy it to storage you have checked, then verify
that the copy is complete before deleting anything else. A reinstall can recreate the
client’s supporting files, but it cannot recreate a game library that you removed.

Also open **Steam > Settings > Storage** and note every library location before changing
files. Steam supports libraries outside its default folder, including locations that can
later be added back through Storage Manager. Preserve the `steamapps` folder in each
library you intend to keep, not only the default path.

## Remove the client without guessing at data

Quit Steam before changing its files. If you only want to remove the app, move Steam from the
Applications folder to the Trash and leave the support folder alone until you have decided
what to keep. If you are following Steam’s full removal path, retain `SteamApps` first when
the library or local saves are wanted, then remove only the remaining Steam data you have
chosen not to keep.

Do not use a terminal deletion command for a folder whose contents you have not inspected.
Moving files to the Trash first gives you a short recovery window. If you need a clean
reinstall, install Steam again only after confirming that the retained library and needed
saves are still available.

## Steam Cloud and local saves are game-specific

Steam Cloud is not a guarantee that every game saves every kind of progress online. Some
games use it, some have settings or limits that matter, and local save locations can differ
from one title to another. A save might be inside a game’s Steam data, elsewhere in the
Library folder, or in a location the game documents separately.

Before deleting `SteamApps` or game-specific files, check the game’s Steam page or support
documentation and, where practical, launch the game to confirm its save state. Keep a copy
of any local save you cannot replace. Treat the verified game data as the source of truth,
not a general assumption about Steam Cloud.

## Decide between a clean reinstall and a permanent removal

A clean reinstall is a smaller job than erasing Steam and every game. Steam's own Mac
instructions let you retain `SteamApps` while removing the rest of the Steam support folder.
That keeps downloaded games available for a new client installation, although Steam may
still verify files or download updates when it reconnects. Keep the folder at the same path,
or copy it to storage with enough room and do not empty the original Trash until the new
client has found the library.

A permanent removal means checking every library shown in **Steam > Settings > Storage**,
including external disks and libraries created under another path. It also means checking
local saves game by game. Some saves live with Steam, some under other Library folders, and
some are managed only by the game. Account access is another practical dependency: make
sure the account name, password, and Steam Guard method are available before removing a
working installation.

After reinstalling, launch one or two games that matter and confirm both the library and the
expected save before deleting the retained copy. After a permanent removal, confirm that no
intended Steam library remains before measuring recovered space. This final check is slower
than emptying the Trash immediately and much cheaper than downloading a large library or
discovering that a local-only save disappeared.

## FAQ

### Does uninstalling Steam delete my games?

Moving the Steam app to the Trash does not by itself remove the game library. The default
library is normally under `~/Library/Application Support/Steam`, but Steam can also use
other library locations. Deleting a library can remove installed games, so check
**Steam > Settings > Storage** and retain each intended `steamapps` folder.

### Does Steam Cloud mean it is safe to delete SteamApps?

Not automatically. Cloud support and the files that a game stores locally vary by game.
Confirm the game’s own Cloud and save behavior before deleting `SteamApps` or related local
data.

### Can I reinstall Steam and use the existing library?

Usually, retaining the `steamapps` folder in every library you use is the key step when
you want to preserve installed games and some local saves. Reinstall Steam only after
you have kept or copied the libraries, and check each game’s save state before removing
the original data.
