To uninstall CleanMyMac, start with MacPaw's own removal procedure for the version you have. Current CleanMyMac uses Applications, while CleanMyMac X has a separate Uninstaller module. Stop any active work, deal with the menu app, and preserve settings you may want again before letting either version remove itself.

## Identify the Version and Purchase Source

Check whether the app is named CleanMyMac or CleanMyMac X, then check your receipt or account for MacPaw Store, App Store or Setapp. Use the instructions for that combination rather than combining two generations of menus.

This guide covers removal. The separate articles on [CleanMyMac safety](https://mole.fit/blog/is-cleanmymac-safe) and [CleanMyMac alternatives](https://mole.fit/blog/cleanmymac-alternative) cover those decisions without changing the uninstall steps.

Before proceeding, record any exclusions or settings you want to recreate, keep your purchase details privately, and copy irreplaceable data you identify to an independent backup. Do not put a license key in a public support request.

## Stop Work and Turn Off the Menu

Finish or stop an active scan or cleanup before quitting. Closing the main window is not the same as handling the separate Menu component, which MacPaw documents in its [Menu controls](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/cleanmymac-menu-on-off).

For current CleanMyMac from MacPaw Store or Setapp, open **Settings**, then **Menu**, and turn off **Enable Menu**. For the App Store edition, that page instead documents **Open at Login**; turn it off, then quit the app. Follow the branch for your edition rather than searching for a control it does not have.

For CleanMyMac X, MacPaw's [Menu instructions](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/cleanmymac-x-menu) use **Preferences**, then **Menu**, then **Menu app**. Deselect **Enable Menu** and quit CleanMyMac X.

If you need to preserve local data before removal, do that while the app is closed. Then reopen the main app only to follow its self-uninstall procedure below. Turning off the Menu is preparation, not an uninstall by itself.

## Use the Documented Self-Uninstall Route

For current CleanMyMac, follow MacPaw's [uninstall page](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/uninstall-cleanmymac):

1. Open CleanMyMac and select **Applications** in the sidebar.
2. Click **Scan** and wait for it to finish.
3. Open **Manage My Applications**, then the **Uninstaller** category.
4. Select CleanMyMac itself, click **Uninstall**, and confirm.

For CleanMyMac X, use its [version-specific instructions](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/uninstall-cleanmymac-x):

1. Open CleanMyMac X and go to **Uninstaller**.
2. Select CleanMyMac X in the app list.
3. Click **Uninstall**.

MacPaw also documents dragging either app to the Trash, but recommends its own uninstaller for supporting files. If your edition does not show the documented module, do not substitute instructions for a different edition. Use the vendor's support route or the Finder fallback below.

The [current Uninstaller documentation](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/uninstaller) lets you expand an app's resources for inspection. Review what will be removed before confirming, especially if you intend to reinstall and want to retain settings.

## Understand Background Items and the Agent

MacPaw's [background-item reference](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/background-items) distinguishes these components. A familiar MacPaw name alone does not identify a file as belonging to the version you removed.

| Component | Documented role | What to verify after removal |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Menu | Menu bar interface | Its icon no longer appears |
| Health Monitor | Supplies health and security data | Any remaining entry belongs to the removed app |
| Updater | Updates CleanMyMac itself | Do not confuse it with updates for other apps |
| Agent | Performs tasks needing elevated privileges | Identify the edition before investigating it |

MacPaw says the [current Agent](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/cleanmymac-agent) is installed separately when a privileged operation needs it and is not available in the App Store edition. Its presence is not evidence that every CleanMyMac installation has the same helper files.

MacPaw also documents the [CleanMyMac X background processes](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/cleanmymac-processes), including its Agent and edition differences. Use those descriptions to identify a remaining component, not a broad search-and-delete for everything named MacPaw.

## If Self-Uninstall Is Unavailable

Apple's [app removal instructions](https://support.apple.com/102610) say to prefer a supplied uninstaller. When one cannot be used, quit the application, locate the exact copy in Finder and move it to the Trash. This is a narrower operation than verifying all its supporting components are gone.

The [CleanMyMac tested-app guide](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/cleanmymac) records the current version's data locations and a Homebrew-specific removal case. Keep that route separate: do not mix its cask cleanup with the self-uninstaller in one attempt, or apply current-version paths to CleanMyMac X.

If a privileged component remains after the vendor procedure, retain its exact name and ask MacPaw about that component. Do not remove a shared MacPaw folder or manually unload a service merely because its name looks related.

## Check the Result and Handle Billing Separately

After removal, check the original app location, the menu bar and the system's login and background-item list. MacPaw's [background-item controls](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/allow-background-items) show where to inspect that list. A remaining label needs identification; it does not by itself prove a process is still running.

For items you moved with Finder, Apple's [removal guide](https://support.apple.com/102610) distinguishes the Trash step from permanent deletion. Treat the Trash as a recovery option only while the original items remain there. A self-uninstall may remove supporting data too, so keep the independent backup beforehand rather than relying on the Trash to restore the complete installation.

Uninstalling does not cancel billing. MacPaw has separate cancellation instructions for [current CleanMyMac](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac/knowledgebase/cancel-subscription) and [CleanMyMac X](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/cancel-subscription), with different routes for direct purchases and App Store purchases. Check the cancellation confirmation in the account that charged you.

If you are moving a CleanMyMac X license, use MacPaw's [activation-transfer instructions](https://macpaw.com/support/cleanmymac-x/knowledgebase/move-to-another-mac); removal, activation management and subscription cancellation are separate decisions. For Setapp, [uninstalling even Setapp itself leaves billing active](https://support.setapp.com/hc/en-us/articles/213588369-Uninstall-Setapp-desktop). Do not remove Setapp just to remove CleanMyMac, since other Setapp apps depend on it.

## Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac's **Software** view offers **Uninstall**, with related items available for review before removal. For this app, start with MacPaw's self-uninstaller. The linked tested-app guide records skipped protected rows and separate receipt handling in its Homebrew test, not proof of a complete Mole-only removal.

## FAQ

### Can CleanMyMac Uninstall Itself?

Yes. MacPaw documents that route for both current CleanMyMac and CleanMyMac X, but their module names and steps differ. Follow the instructions for your installed version.

### Why Is There Still a CleanMyMac Menu or Background Entry?

The Menu, Health Monitor, Updater and privileged Agent are separate components. Identify the remaining item and edition, then use MacPaw's instructions instead of deleting unrelated MacPaw data.

### Does Deleting CleanMyMac Stop My Subscription?

No. Use the billing provider's cancellation route and verify its confirmation. If you want to keep using other Setapp apps, removing CleanMyMac is not a reason to cancel the whole Setapp subscription.
