# Delete GarageBand's Sound Library on Mac: What to Keep

> Locate GarageBand sounds and Apple Loops, check shared Logic content, and separate app removal from sound-library cleanup.

Deleting GarageBand and deleting its downloaded sounds are separate decisions. Before removing anything, decide whether you still need GarageBand, another Apple music app,
or projects that use those instruments and loops. A folder named GarageBand is not enough evidence that its entire contents are unused.

## Separate the app, sounds and your songs

Apple's [app removal instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102610) explain that removing an app does not remove documents you created with it.
Keep your songs and recordings independently of any decision about the downloaded Sound Library.

| Item | What to check | Removal decision |
| --- | --- | --- |
| GarageBand app | Whether you still use the editor | Remove the app separately |
| Downloaded instruments and Apple Loops | Other apps and projects that need them | Review shared content before removal |
| Your songs, recordings and custom loops | A verified independent backup | Keep unless you intentionally want to delete them |

Do not treat synchronization as an independent backup. Keep a checked copy of wanted work before changing shared sound content, and test a project that uses those sounds.

## Check GarageBand's own Sound Library menu

Apple documents **GarageBand › Sound Library › Download All Available Sounds** in its [Mac download instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/101959).
It downloads content, so it is not a cleanup command. Do not choose it while trying to reduce storage.

Those instructions do not establish a Mac control for deleting individual sound packs. Do not apply an iPhone pack-management screen to GarageBand on Mac.
If you still make music, leave needed sounds installed rather than removing a shared folder to test its size.

## Locate the sound content before deleting

These are locations to inspect, not a list to delete. In Finder, [open a folder by its path](https://support.apple.com/en-qa/guide/mac-help/mchlp1236/mac), pasting one complete path at a time:

```text
/Library/Application Support/GarageBand
/Library/Audio/Apple Loops
/Library/Application Support/Logic
```

Apple's archived [sampler documentation](https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/technotes/tn2283/_index.html) identifies instrument samples under the GarageBand support folder.
Its [Apple Loops guide](https://support.apple.com/en-sa/101933) places factory loops under the Apple child of the loops folder, and custom loops in your home Library. Do not confuse downloaded Apple content with your own loops.

Apple's [older Logic content guide](https://support.apple.com/en-ae/guide/logicpro/lgcpf77e757d/10.7/mac/11.0) documents a shared Sound Library with GarageBand and MainStage.
The folder name alone does not identify the only app using it. A missing folder is not a reason to create it.

## Measure this Mac and choose one change

For macOS Ventura 13 and later, Apple's [storage instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/102624) use **System Settings › General › Storage**. Record the available space and inspect the
music-creation category if it appears, using its information button for the available controls.
Review the actual named content before confirming a removal, leaving wanted projects alone.

There is no single GarageBand Sound Library size to promise here. Read the size shown on your Mac and distinguish the application from additional sound content. Choose one
unneeded content item if the storage controls offer it, then check the same view again.
Do not select every music category just because GarageBand is no longer used.

If another Apple audio app remains, keep the shared folders. Logic Pro 12 and MainStage 4 or later use a different layout: Apple's [current relocation instructions](https://support.apple.com/en-us/111094) describe `Logic Pro Library.bundle` in the Music folder. Do not treat the older folders
as a complete inventory of those versions. For relocation and project storage, use
[the Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro guide](https://mole.fit/blog/how-to-clean-up-final-cut-pro-logic-pro-mac).

## Remove GarageBand itself and check recovery

Save wanted work, quit GarageBand and move the app to the Trash using Apple's app removal procedure. Leave sound folders and songs alone during this first change.
The [GarageBand uninstall guide](https://mole.fit/tested-apps/garageband) covers the app's related data.

Before permanently deleting anything, test the projects and other audio apps you kept. An item moved to the Trash remains on disk, and recovery from the Trash is possible only
while it remains there. Do not assume a storage-management deletion uses the same recovery path.
Downloading sounds again depends on Apple still providing them and on your internet connection,
and it cannot recreate your own recordings. For uncertain data, keep a separate copy.

If available space barely changes, compare the app and sound-content sizes separately
and check the Trash. [Uninstall leftovers and review](https://mole.fit/blog/mac-uninstall-leftovers-review-before-delete)
explains why related data needs its own retention decision.

## Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac can uninstall GarageBand through **Apps**. Its uninstall review can list
`/Library/Application Support/GarageBand` unchecked, but it does not list the Logic or
Apple Loops folders as GarageBand's uninstall data. Unchecked means review, not protection.

Mole refuses the shared sound-folder move while a host app remains. After GarageBand,
Logic Pro, MainStage and Final Cut Pro are absent, eligible folders can appear in **Clean**
as **Apple Sound Library**, for review. Final Cut Pro Sound Effects and their containing
folders remain protected when that supplement exists. Review the paths, not a promised saving.

## FAQ

### Does deleting GarageBand remove all its sounds?

Do not assume so. Check the app and downloaded sound content separately, keeping shared content needed by other apps and projects.

### Can Logic Pro still need the GarageBand sound folder?

Yes, older shared-library installations can use it. Newer Logic Pro uses a library
bundle, so check your version and actual library before deciding what is unused.

### Can I get removed sounds back?

Apple's download menu can obtain available content again with an internet connection.
It does not restore your recordings or guarantee that every old sound remains available.
