# Find Intel Apps That Need Rosetta on Your Mac

> Check app architecture on Apple silicon, test native updates, and understand Apple's announced Rosetta limits.

An app opening successfully on an Apple silicon Mac does not tell you whether it runs natively. Before an
operating-system upgrade, identify the Intel apps you still need, then check the app and its add-ons
separately. Do not uninstall a working app just because its architecture is old.

## Check the App in Finder

[Apple's Rosetta guide](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/102527) documents this check. Select the actual
application in Finder, choose File > Get Info, or press Command-I, and read Kind. Check the installed copy you
use, rather than a downloaded installer or an old copy on another disk.

| Kind | Meaning | Next step |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Intel | Built for Intel Macs | Look for an Apple silicon update |
| Universal | Built for Intel and Apple silicon | Check the Rosetta setting and add-ons |
| Apple silicon | Built for Apple silicon | Check any separately installed add-ons |

Record the app's name, version and location before changing it. The architecture of the main app is a starting
point, not a compatibility certificate for every plug-in or updater it uses.

## Understand Open Using Rosetta

Apple explains that a Universal app can offer Open using Rosetta in its Info window. When selected, it runs
the Intel version so that Intel-only plug-ins, extensions or other add-ons can work. A Universal label and an
enabled Rosetta setting can therefore both be correct.

Before clearing that setting, check for native updates to needed add-ons. Quit the app, change only this
setting, reopen it and test a representative document, export or plug-in. If that workflow fails, quit and
restore the previous setting while you ask the developer about compatibility. A missing checkbox is not proof
that Rosetta is absent.

## Check for a Native Update

Apple recommends the App Store for apps obtained there, the developer's website for Universal or Apple silicon
downloads, or the app's own update mechanism. Update separately supplied plug-ins too. Keep important
documents backed up and confirm the replacement supports your macOS version before installation.

After updating, inspect the same installed copy again and repeat the task that matters to you. If it still
says Intel, ask the developer whether a native build exists or is planned. The [Mac app update
guide](https://mole.fit/blog/how-to-update-mac-apps) covers update methods; the [Mac app removal
guide](https://mole.fit/blog/mac-uninstall-leftovers-review-before-delete) is for a separate decision to stop using an app.

## What Apple Has Announced

Apple's support article is dated September 22, 2026. It says Rosetta is available on Apple silicon with macOS
27 or earlier; from macOS 28, functionality is limited to certain older, unmaintained games relying on
Intel-based frameworks. This is not a general exception for every old app or game.

Treat that announcement as a reason to plan replacements, not to delete software today. Check each essential
app and its components before choosing an OS upgrade. A successful launch on your present macOS version does
not establish compatibility with a future one.

## Where Mole Fits

Mole Mac's Software view adds an Intel hint for an identified Intel-only executable on an Apple silicon Mac.
Universal and native apps do not receive that hint, and Intel Macs do not show it. Use it to choose apps to
inspect, then confirm the installed copy and its add-ons through Apple's check above.

## FAQ

### Does Universal Mean Rosetta Is Never Used?

No. A Universal app can be configured to use Rosetta for Intel-only add-ons. Check its Info window and the
add-on developer's requirements before changing that choice.

### Should I Remove Rosetta to Find Dependent Apps?

Use app inspection instead. Removing a working compatibility layer is not needed to identify the apps you must
update.

### What If No Native Update Exists?

Ask the developer about support and test an alternative with copies of your documents before relying on it.
Keep a working environment until you have verified a replacement.
